This series of works, began in 2013, uses collaged elements from several sources, e.g. previously painted canvas, paper or card, to make pure abstract compositions. If themes have subconsciously emerged during the process then these are inevitably referenced in the final piece, but the objective was to avoid any reference to themes or subject matter in order that the individual pieces could stand or fall on their own purely aesthetic merits.

The majority of the works in this series follow the well trodden heritage of traditional modernist aesthetics, where the painting is seen and appreciated as an object in its own right. Composition, colour and surface quality come to the fore and speak without preconceptions of our world view getting in the way. The way we see things is not the only prerequisite for visual art. These pieces are not so easy to produce and people will inevitably put their own spin on them, what they are about and what they mean, which is fine by me, but the task of pure abstraction is a serious undertaking and the artist must develop a relationship with the visual elements which is akin to artists working with movement or sound. When dealing with abstraction the overriding priority is the purity of the art form itself, everything else is an illusion.
